Friendship, loyalty and the ache of parting run through some of the most loved Urdu verse. Below is a collection of friendship couplets, with Roman transliteration and English translation.

Friendship Couplets

Paagal nahin the jo hum teri har baat maante the
Bas teri khushi se ziyaada kuchh achha hi nahin lagta tha

I wasn't mad to agree with everything you said — it was simply that nothing ever felt better to me than your happiness.

Misl-e-sheesha hai hamein thaam ke rakhna Mohsin
Hum tere haath se chhooTe to bikhar jaayenge

Hold me carefully, Mohsin, for I am like glass — should I slip from your hand, I will shatter to pieces.

Guzar jaayega ye daur bhi Ghalib zara itminaan to rakh
Jab khushi na Thehar saki, to gham ki kya auqaat hai

This phase too shall pass — have a little patience; when even joy could not last, what standing does sorrow have?

Neend bhi neelaam ho jaati hai baazaar-e-ishq mein
Itna aasaan nahin hota kisi ko bhool kar so jaana

Even sleep is auctioned off in the marketplace of love — it is not so easy to forget someone and simply fall asleep.

Kitna roya main tere khaatir
Ab sochoon to hansi aati hai

How much I wept for your sake — now, when I think of it, it only makes me laugh.

Koi achha sa phool hota to tumhein zaroor pesh karte
Magar jo khud hi gulaab ho use kya gulaab doon

Were there some lovely flower, I would surely have offered it to you — but what rose can I give to one who is herself a rose?

Meri gumshuda cheezon mein
Sab se mehngi cheez tumhaari aawaaz hai

Among all the things I have lost, the most precious is the sound of your voice.

Tere baghair guzaara nahin hai kisi soorat
Use ye bataane se baat bigaR gayi hai

There is no getting by without you, in any way at all — and telling her so is exactly what ruined everything. (Jaun Elia)

Zindagi se poochhiye, ye kya chaahti hai
Bas ik dost wafaadaar chaahti hai

Ask life what it truly wants — it wants nothing but one faithful friend.

Jitna marzi saanp ko doodh pila le mere dost
Jo doodh pilaaye usi ko Das lete hain

Feed a snake all the milk you like, my friend — it bites the very hand that feeds it.

Aur taalluqaat rahein na rahein par ehtiraam rehna chaahiye
Insaan ka bhi aur us ke raaz ka bhi

Whether or not a relationship survives, respect must remain — respect for the person, and for their secrets too.

Ek baat hamesha yaad rakhna dost
Chaar-deewaari ki siyaasat karne waale log rishton ke chaar TukRe kar dete hain

Always remember one thing, my friend — people who play politics behind closed doors will break a relationship into pieces.

Jab dil dukhte hain to zabaanein khud hi band ho jaati hain
Jinhein ehsaas hi na ho, un se gile shikwe kaise

When hearts are hurt, the tongues fall silent of their own accord — how can one complain to those who feel nothing at all?

RooT jaane ki ada hum ko bhi aati hai Faraz
Kaash hota koi hum ko bhi manaane waala

I too know the art of sulking, Faraz — if only there were someone to coax me back as well. (Ahmad Faraz)

Hum se rooTha bhi gaya, hum ko manaaya bhi gaya
Phir sabhi naqsh taalluq ke miTaaye bhi gaye

They sulked with me, and they coaxed me too — and then every trace of the bond was wiped away as well. (Jaun Elia)

Kisi raat mujhe yaad bhi kar liya karo
Main dost puraana hi sahi magar zinda hoon

Some night, do think of me as well — an old friend I may be, but I am still alive.

Arsa guzra hua ik shaam yaad aaya
Mujh ko tanhaai mein ik naam yaad aaya

After a long while, one evening came back to me — in my solitude, one name came to mind.

Tum ne kaha tha har shaam tera poochhenge
Tum badal gaye ya tere shehar mein shaam nahin hoti

You had said you would ask after me every evening — have you changed, or does evening never fall in your city?

Khud ko aabaad karo aye mere dost
Ke murjhaaye phoolon ka koi khareedaar nahin hota

Rebuild yourself, O my friend — for withered flowers find no buyer.

Dost to bahut hote hain duniya mein magar
Qeemat dosti ki nahin, aitbaar ki hoti hai

There are plenty of friends in this world — but what has real worth is not friendship, but trust.

Shehr-e-khayaal o khwaab mein aabaad ho gaya
Itna use paRha ke mujhe yaad ho gaya

He came to dwell in the city of my thoughts and dreams — I read him so much that I learned him by heart.

Jis ne humein sikhaaya andaaz muskuraane ka
Use hi shauq hai aaj humein rulaane ka

The very one who taught me the art of smiling now delights in making me weep.

Meri zindagi ke raaz mein ik raaz tum bhi ho
Meri khwahishon ki aas mein ik aas tum bhi ho

Among the secrets of my life, you too are one secret — and among the hopes of my longings, you too are one hope.

Jinhein ghussa aata hai aksar woh sachche hote hain
Main ne jhooTon ko din raat muskuraate dekha hai

Those who often lose their temper are usually the honest ones — I have seen liars smiling day and night.

Is se pehle ke be-wafa ho jaayein
Kyun na aye dost hum juda ho jaayein

Before we turn unfaithful to each other — why not, my friend, simply part ways now?

Bas itni baat thi, kehte to hum tarmeem kar lete
Safar ko baanT lete hum, tamkeen taqseem kar lete

It was such a small thing — had you only said it, I would have made amends; we could have shared the journey, and divided its burdens between us.
