Eid is a time of joy, reunion and remembrance — and Urdu poetry captures every shade of it. Below is a collection of Eid couplets, in Roman transliteration and English translation.
Eid Couplets
Des mein nikla hoga kahin Eid ka chaand
Pardes mein aankhein kayi nam hongi
Somewhere back home the Eid moon must have risen — and in foreign lands, many eyes will be brimming with tears.
To those who forever walk the pathway of my heart — a very happy Eid, from the depths of my heart.
Gale milte hain sab aaj puraani baat bhool kar
Eid sikhaati hai mohabbat har ranjish ko dho kar
Today everyone embraces, forgetting old grievances — Eid teaches love by washing away every resentment.
Lamha lamha ye waqt guzar jaayega
Kuchh waqt ke baad Eid ki raat aayegi
Abhi se hamaari mubaarakbaadi le lo
Warna phir ye mubaarakbaadi aam ho jaayegi
Moment by moment this time will pass, and before long the night of Eid will come — take my greetings now, before such greetings become commonplace.
Jin raahon se tum guzro
Un raahon ko bhi Eid mubaarak, mere dost
The very paths you walk upon — a happy Eid to them as well, my friend.
Deedaar tera hai jin ko mayassar maan
Un khush-bakhton ko bhi Eid mubaarak
Those fortunate enough to still see your face, Mother — a happy Eid to them too.
Un ke baghair aaj Eid bhi guzar gayi
Those without whom even an evening once felt impossible — without them, today an entire Eid has passed.
Shehar bhar mein chaand raat ki raunaq hai
Ek mera dil hai ke teri bina udaas baiTha hai
The whole city glows with the festivity of Chaand Raat — and only my heart sits sad, without you.
Yaadon ki kitaabon ko saamne rakh kar
Meri Eidein band kamre mein guzar jaati hain
With the books of memory laid open before me, my Eids pass by inside a closed room.
Har Eid pichhli Eid ki tarah nahin hoti
Kuchh log nahin rehte, kuchh apne nahin rehte
No Eid is ever quite like the last — some people are no longer here, and some are no longer our own.
Aankh tum ko hi jab na paayegi
Eid kaise manaayi jaayegi
When my eyes cannot find you, how is Eid to be celebrated at all?
Haalaan-ke bahut khaas hoti hain
Magar Eidein udaas hoti hain
Though they are meant to be so special — Eids, somehow, are sad.
Har ik dard ki shiddat chhupaayi jaayegi
Eid to Eid hai, aakhir manaayi jaayegi
The intensity of every pain will be hidden away — for Eid is Eid, and in the end it will be celebrated.
Kabhi Eid manaate the
Ab Eid guzaarte hain
Once we used to celebrate Eid — now we merely get through it.
Tomorrow, the day of Eid will make us weep — reminding us once more of the loved ones we have lost.
Khushiyon ki is shaam aur yaadon ke is samaan mein
Apni palkon par hargiz sitaare na laayenge
Rakhna sambhaal kar chand khushiyaan mere liye
Main lauT aaunga to Eid manaayenge
On this evening of joys, amid this air of memories, I will not let the stars of tears rise to my lashes — keep a few joys saved for me; when I return, we shall celebrate Eid.
Aye Eid kuchh waqt ke liye taweel ho ja
Mera humsafar abhi tak ghar nahin aaya
O Eid, stretch yourself a little longer — my companion has not yet come home.
The fasts have washed away the dust that lay upon the heart — and Eid-ul-Fitr has arrived, bringing a new soul.
Bachpan ki woh Eidein yaad aati hain aaj bhi
Maan ki god, baap ka kandha yaad aata hai aaj bhi
I still remember the Eids of childhood — my mother's lap, my father's shoulder, I remember them still.
Eid aayi to dil khil gaye gulshan ki tarah
Khushiyaan bikhri hain fiza mein chaman ki tarah
When Eid came, hearts bloomed like a garden — and joys scattered through the air like a garden in flower.
To those who do not wish to speak to us, who are upset with us; to those who want no ties with us; to those who are far from us — to all of them, a heartfelt happy Eid.
