On the fourteenth of August, Urdu poetry turns to love of country, sacrifice and freedom. Below is a collection of Independence Day couplets — including verses from Faiz's famous Subh-e-Azadi — with Roman transliteration and English translation.
14 August (Independence Day) Couplets
Hai jurm agar watan ki miTTi se mohabbat
Ye jurm sada mere hisaabon mein rahega
If loving the soil of my homeland is a crime — then this crime will forever remain on my account.
Baghair us ke kahaan mumkin thi meri shanaakht
Mera mulk hai mere shajra-o-nasab ki tarah
Without it, how could my very identity exist? — my country is like my own lineage and ancestry.
Hum chup the ke barbaad na ho jaaye gulshan ka sukoon
Naadaan ye samajh baiThe ke hum mein quwwat-e-lalkaar nahin
We stayed silent only so the garden's peace would not be destroyed — the fools took it to mean we had no power to roar.
Na poochh zamaane se hamaari kya kahaani hai
Pehchaan to bas ye hai ke hum Pakistani hain
Do not ask the world what our story is — our identity is simply this: we are Pakistanis.
Is mulk ki sarhad ko koi chhoo nahin sakta
Jis mulk ki sarhad ki nigehbaan hain aankhein
No one can so much as touch the borders of that land whose frontiers are guarded by watchful eyes.
Marte hain uThte hain par jhukte nahin
Aye watan tere laal kabhi bikte nahin
They die, they rise, but they never bow — O homeland, your sons are never for sale.
Woh luTe piTe se qaafile jo watan bana kar chale gaye
Jo na ruk sake, na jhuk sake, jo chaman saja kar chale gaye — hamein yaad hain
Those battered, plundered caravans that built a homeland and passed on — who would neither halt nor bow, who adorned this garden and departed — we remember them, we remember them.
MiTa denge aye dushman tere naam o nishaan ko
Agar tu ne dekha maili aankh se Pakistan ko
We will wipe out your very name and trace, O enemy — should you dare look at Pakistan with an evil eye.
Ragon mein hai junoon mein hai
Watan ka ishq khoon mein hai
It is in our veins, it is in our passion — the love of the homeland runs in our blood.
Apni har saans tere naam karte hain
Aye watan hum tujhe salaam karte hain
We dedicate our every breath to your name — O homeland, we salute you.
Parcham mere watan ka yunhi sarbuland rahega
Teri bhool hai aye dushman tu jhuka sakega hum ko
The flag of my homeland will always fly high — you are mistaken, O enemy, if you think you can make us bow.
Kis ki himmat hai hamaari parwaaz mein laaye kami
Hum parwaazon se nahin hauslon se uRa karte hain
Who has the nerve to clip our flight? — we soar not on wings, but on our courage.
Ye watan aaj bhi apna ye ahd hai
Hum harf-e-wafa khoon se tehreer karenge
This homeland is still our own, and this is our vow — we will write the word of loyalty in our own blood.
Samjho na ye ke aasaan mila hai, de ke hazaaron jaan phir ye mila hai
Khaak mein pehle lahu mila tha, tab ja ke Pakistan mila hai
Do not think it came to us easily — it was won only after sacrificing thousands of lives; first blood was mixed into this soil, and only then did we gain Pakistan.
Na hoga raaigaan khoon-e-shaheedaan-e-watan hargiz
Yehi surkhi banegi ek din unwaan-e-aazaadi
The blood of the homeland's martyrs will never be in vain — one day this very redness will become the headline of freedom. (Nazish Partab)
Kaise manaaoon teri aazaadi ka din aye watan
Mera dil maan hi nahin raha ke main aazaad hoon
How am I to celebrate your independence day, O homeland — when my heart simply refuses to believe that I am free?
Nafrat waqt ke hukmaraanon se hain
Is watan aur jhanDe se nahin
My hatred is for the rulers of the day — never for this homeland or its flag.
Tujhe chalaane waalon se hazaar shikwe hain magar
Aye watan! humein tum se be-panaah mohabbat hai
I have a thousand complaints against those who run you — but O homeland, I love you beyond all measure.
Behte lahu mein sab tera mafhoom beh gaya
Chaudah August sirf tera naam reh gaya
In the flowing blood, all your meaning was washed away — the fourteenth of August, only your name remains.
Khizaan bahaar ka jhagRa na hone diya
Shajar lagaaya bhi khud, khud hara na hone diya
They never let autumn and spring settle their quarrel — they planted the tree themselves, and themselves never let it turn green.
Sitam ye hai ke unnaasi baras ka ho ke bhi
Ye bachcha paaon pe hum ne khaRa na hone diya
The tragedy is this — even at seventy-nine years old, we never let this child stand on its own two feet. (Itbaf Abrak)
Ye daagh daagh ujaala, ye shab-gazeeda sahar
Woh intezaar tha jis ka, ye woh sahar to nahin
This stained, patchy light, this night-bitten dawn — this is not the morning we were waiting for. (Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Subh-e-Azadi)
Falak ke dasht mein taaron ki aakhri manzil
Kahin to hoga shab-e-sust-mauj ka saahil
Kahin to ja ke rukega safeena-e-gham-e-dil
In the desert of the sky, the final destination of the stars — somewhere there must be a shore to this slow-tided night; somewhere, at last, the ship of the heart's sorrow will come to rest.
Jawaan lahu ki pur-asraar shaahraahon se
Chale jo yaar to daaman pe kitne haath paRe
Bahut azeez thi lekin rukh-e-sahar ki lagan
As friends set out along the mysterious highways of young blood, how many hands clutched at their garments to hold them back — yet dear above all was the yearning for the face of dawn.
Suna hai ho bhi chuka hai firaaq-e-zulmat o noor
Suna hai ho bhi chuka hai visaal-e-manzil o gaam
Nishaat-e-visaal halaal o azaab-e-hijr haraam
They say the parting of darkness and light is already done; they say the goal and the journey have already met; the joy of union is now permitted, and the torment of separation forbidden — or so, with bitter irony, they claim.
Jigar ki aag, nazar ki umang, dil ki jalan
Kisi pe chaara-e-hijraan ka kuchh asar hi nahin
The fire of the liver, the yearning of the eye, the burning of the heart — on none of these has the remedy for separation had any effect at all.
Abhi giraani-e-shab mein kami nahin aayi
Najaat-e-deeda o dil ki ghaRi nahin aayi
Chale chalo ke woh manzil abhi nahin aayi
The heaviness of the night has not yet lifted; the hour of deliverance for the eye and heart has not yet come — keep walking on, for that destination is still not here.
Ek hue the to bana tha Pakistan
Ek rahenge to bachega Pakistan
It was when we united that Pakistan was made — and only if we stay united will Pakistan endure.
